In the 1970’s OPEC raised the price of crude oil and caused a global panic. The US Government and the EU powered money into research from the mid 1970’s to the mid 1980’s. A large number of worthy ideas were pursued but the research budgets were cut as soon as oil prices fell back to more normal levels in the mid 1980's. We have reviewed thousands of research projects that were carried out from the start of the industrial revolution and absorbed the most successful ideas into our designs. Unless we can create a sustainable society that can function without fossil fuels there is no future.

In the 1980’s most of the research establishments across the planet were closed down.  Now is the time that we need for new ideas yet all the governments of the world appear to have lost all interest in research. This is a subject that we will be addressing at great length in this column.

  • Who does building research?

In the 1970’s the US Government and the EU invested a lot of money in research as they sought ways to protect their population against future oil price rises. In the late 1980’s the price of oil fell and all interest in research was lost.

  • Renewables – the truth

Renewable energy systems make no commercial or environmental sense as they are all carbon positive. Today’s children will have no future if governments continue to support wind turbines, photovoltaic panels and bio fuels.
